A Weathering is a large-scale sculptural installation commissioned by Bundanon Art Museum for the exhibition Inside, Underground curated by Sophie O’Brien and Boe-Lin Bastian. The work traces shifting states of materiality, creating a space for the speculative and scientific to coalesce. This tracing unfolds amongst large sculptural steel frameworks, biomasonry bricks made from a seaweed and oyster shell composite, borrowed bluestone from Bundanon’s flood landscaping, and polypropylene fishing nets that have been loaned from local oyster farms on Jerrinja Country, Greenwell Point. A Weathering is a question and a provocation– how are we going to live with the weight of our emissions? The installation tethers between the assembled and dismantled, the ingested and excreted, the promise of growth and construction, and the inevitability of decay.
The artist acknowledges the people of the Dharawal and Dhurga language groups as the traditional owners of the land on which Bundanon Art Museum is situated, and recognises their continuous connection to culture, community and Country. In Dharawal the word Bundanon means deep valley. A Weathering was commissioned as part of Siteworks 2022, a collection of projects that respond to climate research, critical thinking through art, science and design, First Nations knowledge and technologies, and creative digital spaces. It’s partnered with the World Weather Network, an international alliance of scholars, artists, writers and communities initiated by the UK-based arts organisation, Artangel.
